Father, Son & The Holy Spirit
As Christians we believe that God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are one and the same. For instance, a shamrock has 3 leaves but one stem. Its 3 yet one. To try to fully understand the trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is something that will not fully comprehend until we meet God in Heaven. Thats why its a matter of faith. We believe, yet, we may not completely understand.
We also believe that in the beginning God created everything: The sun, the moon, the stars, the earth, the universe; all of it. God has always existed. He was not born and will never die. Reading Genesis will give you more in-depth understanding of the beginning of time.
When you hear about the Trinity in the Bible, you can go all the way back to the beginning in Genesis when God seems to be talking in the singular. God made the earth and HE said it was GOOD. HE then made the light, called it day, and said it was GOOD. HE then made the darkness, called it night, and said it was GOOD. After a few other creations (the sky, the oceans, the dry ground, vegetation, animals etc...), HE made man and called him Adam, but before HE did so, HE said this:
(Genesis 1:26): God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let him rule over the fish of the sea and the birds and the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.
Who was GOD, The FATHER, talking to? This has been debated and is still debated today around the world in religious communities. Some say that HE is talking to HIS angels. Others say that HE is talking with HIS Son and with the Holy Spirit. Through scripture from the Old Testament and the New Testament you will learn many things about the FATHER, the SON and the HOLY SPIRIT.
The Father...
Below are some scriptures that will help familiarize you with who the father is.
The Creator
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:3
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
The Father of Jesus
Matthew 3:16-17
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
Luke 9:35
And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!
The One to Sacrifice His Son
Matthew 27:46
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
The Final Judge
Revelation 6:9-10
When the lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered because of the word of God and the testimony they had given. and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"
Understanding Jesus is Understanding Him
Luke 10:22:
All£ things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
Only Through Jesus Can You Know Him
John 14:5:
Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?
John 14:6:
Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
How Should We Come to the Father?
James 4:10:
Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
Jesus (The Son)...
Who is He?
John 3:16-18:
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but
have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the
world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him
might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned:
but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he
hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of
God.
Both God and Human
Matthew 1:20-23:
Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.
22So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us.
Why His Virgin Birth is Important to Christian Faith
Luke 1:34:
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together (sexually), she was found with child (pregnant) of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:18); Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I do not know a man?
(He was born of a virgin which is a miracle that only God can perform. Go to the following book of the Bible to read the whole story of the birth of Jesus Matthew 1&2 Luke 1, 2&3)
Importance of His Humanity
John 1:14:
And the Word (God) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten (son, Jesus) of the Father, full of grace and truth.
What Did He Do
John 5:25:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now
is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God:
and they that hear shall live."
Isaiah 53:5:
But it was for our sins He was wounded, and for our evil doings He was crushed: He took the punishment by which we have peace, and by His wounds we are made well.
(Jesus died for our sins. He made the ultimate sacrifice for us so that we could live with him in Heaven forever. Its too much to list on this page, so please go to the following book of the Bible and read the following chapters for the whole story of the crucifixion of Jesus)
Matthew Chapters 26, 27, 28
The Resurrection
(The Reasons Christians Have Hope of Salvation)
Mark 1:1-10:
1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; He has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where He lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell His disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."
8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to Him, clasped his feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."
Jesus rose from the dead to show his power over death. ; Something that no other religion can clam about there God. Our God lives.
He is the Light to Mankind
John 1:4, 5:
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Hebrews 2:14, 15:
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.
What Kind of Relationship Can We Have with Him
As you can see through the verses that you've read, Jesus came to give His life for you and pay the price for the sin of the world. So, what kind of relationship can you have with Jesus? As deep a relationship as you want. He longs for a profound relationship with you and loves you so much.
The Holy Spirit...
Who He Is
John 14:26:
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
John 3:6:
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
God Sent The Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 5:5:
Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a
guarantee.
Carries out Gods work in us
Philippians 1:6-8:
Being confident of this very thing, that He (God) who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 7just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, in as much as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. 8For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.
Brings Unity to Believers
Ephesians 4:3, 4:
Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling.
Helps us discern false teaching
1 John 2: 26, 27:
These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. 27But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
Helps us Pray
Romans 8:26, 27:
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 7Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Help Us Speak for Christ
Matthew 10: 19-20:
But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
Luke 12:11, 12:
Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. 12For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.
Closing Remarks...
I hope that this was helpful in answering any questions that you might have as to who is the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the infallible Word of God, written by men that were under the inspiration of God. Not one single word is an accident in the Bible. God meant for all of it to be written exactly as you see. Thats why you see a lot of scripture here. What better way of describing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit than to let God describe himself.
