History of the Church
Choosing a church to that you want to call the Home Church can be a chore in and of itself. Questions may arise, such as Am I being taught the true word of God? or Is Gods spirit really in this group of believers? or even if it is a great, God fearing church, Is this where the Lord truly wants me to be? These questions and more may run across your mind and rightly so.
The world is full of many, many denominations due to the different interpretations of the Bible. To explain all of them would be several books worth of information and not be realistic for us to do, so, I would recommend going to the Christian bookstore and finding a book on the differences in Christian denominations if you are really not sure where you should go. Or, if you know of a church in your area or if you have a friend or relative that is a Christian who goes to a church, ask them for some help. You may also ask to speak to their pastor to get some guidance on this matter.
Mission Lighthouse Ministry wants to help you understand the following: What ever you do, ask the Lord to lead you to the right church. Make sure that the church is grounded in the scripture and that they have a doctrine which follows this statement: Salvation comes through faith in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of the living God, which was for the forgiveness of all sin.
Be careful of false teachers and those who want nothing more than to take advantage of you financially or otherwise. (Read our section on tithing for a little more on this subject)
The bible says this:
Matthew 24: 23, 24: Then if anyone says to you, Look, here is the Christ! or There! do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
The church is a place for you to be able to praise God in worship as well as a place to learn the about the Bible, the Good News of Jesus. It is a meeting place to have fellowship with your other Christian Brothers and Sisters, and a place to grow in your walk and relationship with Jesus Christ.
The most important concept in choosing the right church is to make sure that it has Jesus as its central core and that the Word is being Preached and Practiced to its fullness. If you feel a little uneasy about a church that you are visiting, then ask the Lord to reveal to you what the problem is and HE will. It may be that you are just new and dont know anybody yet, then again it may be that there is something amiss in that particular church and the Holy Spirit is warning you.
Dont get into the habit of church hopping. You wont learn anything that way and you wont make any Christian friends. Christian friends are of great importance. The bible say it like this:
Acts 2:42: They were devoting themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Hebrews 10:25: Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one anotherand all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Christian fellowship is essential in growing spiritually and is helpful when you need someone to lean on and lift you up. There is nothing like having Christian friends to pray with you and comfort you in times of need. Or just to have someone to hang out with. Remember, you become who you are around the most. Its best to surround yourself with Christian friends so that you become more Godley.
